Professor Wu’s research interests include fast DSP (digital signal processing) algorithms, digital picture compression and quality assessment, video processing and enhancement, embedded DSP systems and their industrial applications. |
| Lecture Abstract |
This talk examines the state-of-the-art in the aforementioned three key areas closely related to perceptual 3D video coding and highlights an agonising impasse in a much needed paradigm shift for video coding design based on Shannon’s entropy and rate-distortion theories from a bitrate driven to a visual quality driven design approach. By examining visual distortions/artefacts induced by standard video coders, it raises the need for further quantitative evaluation of inter‐view masking and facilitation effects, visibility thresholds at JND level and the supra-threshold region, and disparity measurements of luminance-, texture-, chroma-, and/or frequency-contents-mismatch between the two views for either 3D video quality/ experience assessment or visual quality regulated 3DV coding design. It provides insights into a comprehensive mathematical formulation and illustration of a theoretical framework for perceptual quality regulated encoding of 3D video in terms of just noticeable differences and techniques applicable to various coding components of the framework. |
