| Lecture Abstract |
Today translating and interpreting have become an international vehicle of communication. With view to this development, all higher education institutions offering Translation & Interpreting studies have adapted themselves to a “cultural turn” and have undergone fundamental changes especially with regard to what they consider their main tasks. Emphasis has shifted from mere language training to translation training which also comprises cultural-training and cross-cultural mediation, for culture does influence translation, no doubt, in many ways. There is a general agreement among the translation theorists today that one of the most crucial qualities a translator or an interpreter must have is the ability to read and understand cultural signs and codes, in both the source culture and the target culture. |
