The School of Foreign Languages (SFL) of Xidian University was established in 2013, originating from the Department of Foreign Languages set up in 1985. Currently it offers four undergraduate majors, namely English (a national first-class Undergraduate Major Construction Site), Japanese, Translation and International Education of Chinese Language (for international students only). SFL has one First-level Master’s Degree Discipline of Foreign Language and Literature and Professional Master's Degree Program in Translation and Interpreting (MTI). The language courses available include English, Japanese, Russian, French, Korean and German.
SFL has two provincial-level scientific research platforms, namely Key Laboratory of Language Intelligence of Shaanxi Higher Education Institutions and Shaanxi Cultural Heritage Communication and Research Center. SFL also hosts seven research centers (EST Research Center, Foreign Literature and Culture Innovative Research Center, Translation and Cross-cultural Communication Innovation Research Center, Belt and Road Communication Research Center, Research Center for Area Studies in the Caribbean Region, Language and Cognition Innovative Research Center and Research Academy for Digitalization of Foreign Language Education) and sixteen bases for internship and talent training.
SFL has 143 full-time teachers, including 86 professors and associate professors), among whom there are 28 postgraduate supervisors. SFL has one member of the National Foreign Languages Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, one member of the “High-level Talent Introduction Program” of Shaanxi Province, one Provincial Distinguished Professor and one University-level Distinguished Professor. Some visiting professors at home and abroad are also working at SFL.
SFL has undertaken over 20 National Projects as well as more than 40 Provincial and Municipal Social Science Projects in recent years. The faculty has published over 100 papers in SSCI, CSSCI and other core journals, and more than 100 works of various types, including monographs, translated works, and teaching materials, among which are “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” and “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” National level official textbooks. The teachers have won numerous provincial and ministerial awards in various teaching and research projects, receiving wide influence and high praise in the industry.
SFL attaches great importance to the development of internationalization, having established various types of international student exchange and cooperation programs with well-known universities around the world successively, including Missouri Western State University, University of California, Santa Barbara, University of California, Riverside, Lancaster University, University of Stirling, Kanazawa University, University of Tsukuba, Kansai University and J.F.Oberlin University. Students are encouraged to pursue internship programs at international organizations, thus cultivating internationalized foreign language talents who possess a sense of national identity, a global perspective and global competence.
