The School of Physics traces its origins to the Physics Teaching and Research Section of the General Education Division founded in the mid-20th century. It successively developed from the Physics Department to the Physics Discipline of the School of Science, the Physics Discipline of the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, and the School of Physics founded in 2022.
The predecessors of the School of Physics took the lead in carrying out teaching and research practices in Radio Physics, making Xidian University one of China’s first universities to offer relevant degree courses. The university achieved remarkable achievements in wave propagation and scattering in random media and invented China’s first millimeter-wave communication prototype.
The School of Physics possesses a first-level discipline with doctoral and master’s degree authorization in Physics, a post-doctoral station in Physics, and offers 4 undergraduate programs, Three of these programs are designated as national first-class majors: Electronic Information Science and Technology, Radio Wave Propagation and Antenna, and Applied Physics. The fourth program, Quantum Information Science, was officially approved by the Ministry of Education in 2024. The school now has an International Cooperation Platform for Optoelectronic Perception Science and Technology under Complex Environments, 2 provincial/ministerial-level key scientific research platforms, 3 provincial-level experimental-teaching demonstration centers, 2 provincial-level innovative talent training pilot zones, 1 postgraduate joint training demonstration station in Shaanxi Province, 1 provincial-level practical teaching base, 1 university-enterprise joint laboratory, 4 college students’ extracurricular scientific and technological innovation activity bases, and Xi’an Observation Station of the Radio Wave Environmental Monitoring Network of the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry of China. The school also has 5 courses that have won Provincial Excellent Course awards. In recent years, the school has received over ten national-level and provincial/ministerial-level science and technology awards, as well as more than ten provincial/ministerial-level teaching awards, such as the Second Prize of National Teaching Achievements and the Grand Prize of Teaching Achievements of Shaanxi Province.
The school has made significant contributions to national development and social progress through its focus on talent cultivation. Notable alumni include leading scholars such as Wang Zhonglin, a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and a member of the European Academy of Sciences; Wu Xiangping, a CAS academician; and Yu Quan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). Additionally, the school has produced numerous other distinguished alumni, including top technical experts, university administrators, and successful entrepreneurs.
The school takes the research of basic physics in the field of electronic information as the foundation to enhance its strength and attaches great importance to the recruitment and cultivation of top talents. It upholds the idea of cultivating innovative talents and focuses on improving the quality of teaching in general courses like College Physics and College Physics Experiments. It also holds an open and inclusive attitude towards the school’s development, adhering to the principle of “striving to win more opportunities to tap the full potential of existing resources and achieve Physics+”, aiming to establish a sustainable and attractive discipline of physics covering talent cultivation, scientific research, exchanges, and cooperation, in order to build the school as one of the model physics disciplines in China’s engineering universities.
